Master of Fine Arts in Software trial run results

The MFA for Software trial run ended yesterday. It was quite an experience. It was a success, in these senses:

• Is the idea of a low-residency crafts/arts-based postgraduate degree in software a good one? Would people be justified in spending their money on it? Yes.

• Can the idea be implemented? Is there a path from what we did this past week to a smoothly running and well-tuned program? Yes. I think we know what such a program would look like, and we have solid ideas about ironing out the glitches.

• Do the students want to come back and help fix the glitches? Yes, all of them. (!)

• Can the path be traversed reasonably quickly? Yes. I think one more trial run should be enough to let us offer the program for real.

The event triggered a lot of ideas in my head. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be documenting the ones that stick. Other people at the event have blogs, too. And there's also an MFA wiki and mailing list.
